Curator’s Comments:
I like the juxtaposition of figures in this photograph. The young girl on the bicycle seems to embody all that is fleeting- including beauty and youth. Mickey Mouse, as wizard, is a static element in the wall of bright and garish graffiti. There, the decayed patch of the doorway becomes another foil to Mickey’s magic. Formally, there’s an interesting compositional balance and interplay between colors and shapes; Mickey’s red robe drops down into the cyclists red gloves, while the yellow painted ‘tags’ move to either side of her head. The yellow-brown basket functions as a triadic break. I also enjoy the second figurative piece in the series recently posted, but I don’t quite understand what I’m seeing. The large female head, cut off at the mouth, looks to be part of a larger painted mural. But I’m not sure where the wall ends and the more industrial looking ground begins. Nonetheless, it’s a fascinating image, as the context of the large portrait looms over a roughly constructed outdoor environment, with a nativity sketched in.
