Curator’s Comments:
I came across Bright City randomly, and it transmitted feelings about the here & now despite being posted back in 2009. The modestly scaled acrylic work envisions the visual weight above a city as a sort of shapeless white static. The colorful structures, devoid of human presence, nonetheless actively display their chromatic reflections in either a water barrier or wall in the immediate foreground. The piece dynamically juxtaposes confinement versus airy breathing space, as the alternating bands of gestural paint define structure and space. I see the color, and absence of in the top portion, as more atmospheric than literal. But of course, the obscuring white and light blue static could alternatively represent snow. Bright City is an interesting piece to contemplate. There’s hope the brilliance will remain after the clouds have lifted.
