Curator’s Comments:
I don’t know how your paintings have escaped my attention for so many years. This piece dedicated to Buffalo Soldiers is particularly captivating, with the stylized dark contours creating flamelike patterns through the various figures and surrounding landscape. The dark brown steer merge visually with the human figure and tented caravan in the background. They arguably form a single warm-hued unit working through a majestic, but less than hospitable land. With longer viewing I wonder if the sky was intended to offer some respite from the sharp mountains and tall grass, as the forms are softer in shape and tone. The clouds still carry a good deal of directional movement, and so compositionally as well as psychologically they appear to push the figures through the space. This painting remains a popularly viewed piece on the site despite it being posted more than a decade ago. I do hope you will consider sharing new work if you’ve remained artistically active.
