Curator’s Comments:
This group of religious monoprints (Crucification, Calvary & Annunciation) has a strong use of black contrast and tinted color, suggesting a conceptually relevant stained glass effect. Crucifixion is my favorite of the grouping, as it strikes an engaging balance between small elements and overarching shapes. (The work reminds me of the expressionist painting The Old King by George Renault in its heavy black contours and color. ) The warm red color palette of course calls to mind blood and passion within the Judeo-Christian narrative, but contributes to an overall mood rather than didactic or specific illustration. The grid system that divides the picture plane abstracts the image a bit more, but successfully organizes the gestural marks against the active ground. Outside of the religious imagery, I really enjoy the print titled Winter Walk. The clarity of the image is quite eye-catching- stripped away of the usual textures normally associated with the woodcut technique.
