Comment
Thank you very much and your very right, this is a bit of departure from other paintings.
Curator’s Comment:
This more recent painting seems to be quite a departure from your artificially lit interior world of Burlesque. The outstretched figure in the tree limb conjures cat-like associations, but the garishness of her costuming clearly puts her at odds with nature. Her confrontational, direct stare subsequently denies any voyeuristic inclination, despite her provocative gesture and attire. I find her features faintly androgynous. But perhaps this effect is simply due to her more naturalistic coloration against her literally candy-colored hat, bright green foliage and the blue sky in her immediate environment. This piece, like your others, is superbly painted, but has a very different and conflicted psychological mood. I find it curious that the landscape itself doesn’t offer any explanation or narrative to give context to her uneasy allure. It would seem to the viewer to be intentionally left austere as to not detract from the figure. In doing so, it also becomes another stage.
