Curator’s Comments:
This new Canto series you posted today is truly epic, in both narrative sequencing and in the heroic scope of characters. I appreciate the manner in which some of the elements and faces are repeated, to create a continuous and recognizable voice throughout the body of work. The repetition of identifiable elements also helps foster aesthetic continuity and some sort of visual rest within these active compositions. I find it interesting that the landscape in which they interact is quite abstract by comparison to their photographic portraits. The works appear to be mixed media with photographic collage of both mythical and real individuals from history, but this isn’t specifically noted on the listing. The inhospitable nature of several of the environments conjures legends of both hell and parched earth, while the shift in representation reinforces the relationship of players in a stage set. I’m very attracted to number fifteen because of the hierarchical scale of the cast. They all exist in the same space, as well as in our collective memory.
