carnivale_edited-1 - Abstract mixed media. It reminded me of the carnival atmosphere in Brazil, and a harbor city.

Curator’s Comment:

Carnavale is a joyous work, with an exuberant warm palate and organic figuration. I respond to the pattern in this piece, and the way the densely packed spaces open up to a larger expanse towards the center. The shapes do suggest an ornamental architecture for me, especially in the truncated shapes in the bottom.  The small star like clusters and circles along with fleur de leis create a rhythmic pattern, while the violets, orange and green provide an interesting contrast of hue outside of the atmospheric center. I’m also intrigued by your inherent flexibility in working with much more representational subject matter, to this looser abstract handling of form. A more significant gestural approach is also witnessed in Cabaret.  While some of your tighter, realistic works share a lush use of pattern and color- such as Woman in Red (2) and Art for Lanesboro Peonies in Pink, the more ambiguous organic forms tend to hold my interest the longest.
