Curator’s Comments:
The small acrylic painting Cave dweller Rejoicing caught my attention today, as I was curious about the layering of image, and process. The light reflected on the figures contours seem to come from a source beyond the lighter patches of color streaming vertically down the canvas. With the head of the subject obscured, the piece has a mystery within its abstraction. I intuit a primal quality to the rejoicing pose, but that could also be influenced by the work’s title. The stylistic handling of the cave dweller appears to be fairly unique in your portfolio on the site, with other paintings expressing more straightforward representation or, as in A Tree Grows Near Fukushima, painterly expression nearing non-objectivity. I like the ambiguity in this work, and all that it invokes.
