Chaps came up randomly on the site today.  I’m glad it was brought to my attention, having been posted some time ago.  As a thumbnail image it was difficult to decipher the subject matter, despite the explicitly descriptive title, and fairly realistic rendering I enjoyed when I looked more closely.  The linear marks in the chaps and turned up ground function as an expressive contrast to the static text of the newspaper support.  The age of the newspaper, revealed in tone and content, lend a nostalgic mood to the drawing. But again, I find the gestural marks in the figure’s legs and sway of the fringe animate and almost negate this stabilizing substrate. The extended horse leg in the underlying advertisement is also an ironic echo of the human feet. Your other pieces on the site appear to develop an atmospheric space from graduated color and shaded values.  This piece is an interesting break from those more traditional figure-ground relationships.  Please do consider posting new works when you come back to the site.
