Curator’s Comments:
I immediately recognized your new work, Cherries, on the site before I read your post about the new piece. I always enjoy seeing your work on the site, and marvel at the dexterity you’ve shown the last few years vacillating between drawing and sculpture in your studio practice. This new sculpture shares the hallmarks I’ve come to recognize as your signature style; cantilevered forms set up in anchored relationships suggesting aeronautical motion or tension. What is unusual about this piece is your title and stated reference to a specifically recognizable subject. I had recently commented that the red sphere in your sculpture Silver Bullet functioned as a sort of period, or punctuation to a visual sentence. I of course now see the extended curved aluminum rods as stems for cherries. They arc up over a less discernable grouping of colored shapes that together suggest a motorized entity. Whereas I’ve interpreted architectural or tectonic relationships in some of your other geometric sculptures, this piece conjures the inner working of a more industrial machine. The cherries are faintly echoed elsewhere in the sculpture’s color and shape; with the pinkish “L” shaped piece and cylindrical metal heads. Rather than having all of the forms originate from a common point on the stone base, the sculpture fractures into multiple linear projections. Because of this compositional detachment, I see the piece as less contained; more about breaking apart than working together.
