Thank you Nikki, I've enjoyed seeing your work evolve over the past few years. I marvel at the surfaces you're able to coax from pastels. I never had the patience for the medium.
Kristen, thanks for taking the time to study Bigleaf Maple and Chrysanthemums. I enjoy and value your feedback.
Curator’s Comment:
Thank you for sharing your new work to the site. Big Leaf Maple is a wonderfully airy pastel piece, capturing the beautiful color and light contrasts of the fall season (apparent on both of our US coasts!) I appreciate the thin white lines breaking through the clusters of foliage, which keeps the value pattern high key and varied. The irregularity of the positioning of trees in the composition is also to be admired. While many of your other drawings reveal close cropping of the landscape, I get the spatial sense I’m in the treetops with the absence of a grounding horizon. The newest work, titled Chrysanthemums is even more zoomed in, abstracting the blooms to almost unrecognizable patterned spirals. The impressionist dabs of color give way to flame-like marks in this floral work, and evocate a dynamic burst of movement. I look forward to seeing your works move through the seasons on the site.
