Curator’s Comments:
Clearing is a fresh, light work to usher in the new year. Created many years ago, the painting appeared on the site recently, and I appreciated it’s abstract reference to landscape. While the title and blurred edges of the cloud like-formations suggest a receding path moving away from the viewer in space, the ambiguity of form also allows it to be interpreted as a seascape. The white foreground alleviates the sensation of a solid ground, with cooler “waves” flanking the sides of the composition. Looking through your other pieces on the site, I remember admiring the rather austere paintings you created of the beach. Various fences set up a relationship to unseen horizons. Clearing, like the beach fence paintings and Provincetown Dune are surprisingly small in scale. Viewing the actual paintings must feel like looking at snapshots, or out of small windows into a much larger space.
