I appreciate the elegant geometric simplicity of these constructions.  The piece identified as # 401 is particularly effective at playing with the illusionistic space versus physical nature of the picture plane. The very thin cast shadows revealed in the photo suggest a gap in the overlapping substrates; which plays off against the painted boundaries. The minimal color palette also contributes to the elemental components. However, this piece doesn’t offer a conflicting tension between colored planes as seen in the works such as #537 or # 535 with more primary red hues and achromatic contrast.  I also prefer the large single square in # 401 as the off kilter positioning of the opposing values isn’t provided a visual counterbalance to even out the diagonal slant. This small bit of destabilizing movement offers unanticipated interest in the otherwise economic work.
