Curator’s Comments:
Contrast came up randomly on the site for me today, and though I originally viewed your work quite a while ago, I immediately recognized it within your series of narrative paintings. The construction- or structural dissolution of the bodies is less evident in this piece than some of your other paintings. But the form still seems to be made of wood or metal rather than flesh and blood. The breakdown of the orange wall in the background echos the erosion of the bodies, and yet the bright complementary blue hue injects bright light into the space they inhabit. The title of the piece interests me, as the small wings on the dominant subject certainly contrast the rest of his physique, but I believe the contrast referenced is intended to draw attention to the positions and gestures of the two opposing men. While they both carry crude implements- some might interpret weapons, the angelic wings suggest the figure closer to us is the preferred, or righteous protagonist in the story. I do hope you've continued this series in recent years, and would love to see additional paintings on the site. They really are a pleasure, even as they twist our psychological expectations about the living.
