Curator’s Comment:

This is a fun piece. Cowgirl merges wonderfully modulated color and form with idiosyncratically campy attributes.  I noticed a more nuanced romanticism in the treatment of your other female figures.  Works such as Girl in Red or Lauri in Charcoal are more classically rendered, so I’m wondering if the intent is to push your body of work into a more self-satirical milieu with this piece.  It’s the costuming of the hat and short denim shirt tied in a knot at her cleavage that is most reminiscent of a pin-up genre, reminiscent of Tom of Finland or Mel Ramos.  The denim has striking contrast- a bright, almost luminous blue.  Her right hand is positioned seductively on her heart-shaped belt buckle, pointing to her unconcealed sexuality. But the background in this work stays muted, without the graphic contrast redolent of posters of the Post-War era. The pastel media further supports her demurred softness, as her face is shadowed from view, but her head tilts coyly up to the viewer. You certainly have the technical range and breadth to compel multiple layers of content.
