Curator’s Comment:

Wonderful stylistic range in your work- I appreciate the distinct realism in your straightforward landscape to this more bleak humanistic abstraction.  The figures here, inspired by the Gormly statues, seem to exist in desolation but they visually reach out to an uncertain horizon, creating ambiguous and ironically disparate sentiments of isolation and inter-connectivity.   The lack of color strips emotion and empathy from the figures, but in exchange the black and white palette transmits a shimmering reflective quality on the watery ground.  At irregularly composed intervals, there’s a sense the figures are echoes of themselves, or they at least transcend specific time and place.  The elongated horizontal format accentuates this spatial rift.

Winter on the Moors, by contrast, is grounded in a particular, idyllic setting. But I love that the painting includes innocuous elements, keeping the scene from becoming too sentimental.  The criss-crossing of the thin dark slivers of ground hint at snowed over boundaries in the concealed landscape.  I also like that this piece seems densely and vertically packed with information, but also includes open areas of pure blue-white snow.  There’s a sophisticated rhythm to the opening and closing of space. It’s as if the entire composition is compressed and texturally compacted in the far left, and then opens to a calm expanse as the viewer moves across the hills.
