Curator’s Comments:

Figuring Culzean references the name of the Scottish Castle, the title of this photograph functions as a simple descriptor, but also brings with it haunting historical connotations. Posted many years ago, the piece appeared in a random selection on the site, and drew me in for a closer look.  I appreciate the comments left by Luise H. Andersen back in 2009 about the soft contrast of the horizon, and romantic timelessness of the image.  But it’s the double portrait depicted that most captures my imagination and narrative interest.  The sea worn surface of the stone, included on the skewed stone bust place the male figure solidly in the distant past, whereas the living female subject provides a fresh, contemporary contrast.  The architectural column set squarely in the center of the image broadens this split.
