Curator’s Comments:
I believe this body of work benefits from repetition of form to create a totality of expression. Perhaps there’s also a desire to read the pieces linearly because of the strong horizontal orientation. The rope hangers imply a functional or rustic origin for the found materials and objects, such as in Dance, while the piece entitled Unrelating is more austere in its stark white presentation on a black ground. The visceral nature of Dance is especially intriguing when one views the detail of the embedded object. The jewel like purse is a startling cultural artifact when witnessed engulfed within what appears to be cracked earth. It suggests burial or the discovery of personal remains after natural disaster. Human made objects certainly seem to be overtaken by forces or erosion or slow decay. But perhaps that’s a macabre interpretation of the content, and the sculptural intent is purely formal juxtaposition of textural surfaces and materials. Actual dimensions aren’t indicated on the pieces, and I’m particularly curious as the impact of the asymmetrical balance of weight might take on more significance when viewed on a larger scale. The structures function as ladders or weighing scales…one wonders what hangs in the balance.
