Curator’s Comments:  

 

Deceptive Appearances resonates with the viewer on many levels- I enjoy these multifaceted mixed media works immensely.  A playful look turned subversive at feminine gender roles, the silver patterns overlap and poignantly interrupt the film-like stills of the happy bridal couple along the long side.  I see the spoons as imposing spokes, or oars along the bough of a moving vessel.  The archetypal mother-daughter pair in the upper left of the piece forms a cleanly contrasted entryway into the space, and content of the work. The woman appears to instruct her mirrored daughter in the small apron in and about the domestic realm.  I appreciate the muted overall colors in the collage, which unify the space.  They also marry (no pun intended) the different time frames and scenarios.
