Curator’s Comment:
I appreciate the emotive power in the sparse paring down of plant and animal forms. Not quite folk-inspired or pictographic, the painting contains a rather sophisticated iconic narrative underneath its straightforward vision. I’m drawn to the dark animal form in the center and the fragile dying tree, while the orange netting lays coiled, serpent-like in the extreme foreground. Its intense color, more saturated than the natural surroundings, is a warning of looming and present danger. The picture manages a bleak picture for the environment, but maintains indistinguishable warmth and charm. I could also see the patterned peaks in the picture as hopeful, whether in the rocky formation or small braches that push up past the horizon into the decidedly bluer sky.
