Curator’s Comment:
Demolition (Series 1) is a strong, and yet nuanced work. I find the bold confident lines and blocks of color beautifully support the more tenuous linear elements and textural qualities seen upon closer inspection. The tectonic iconography implies shifting boundaries and architectural structure in disarray. For me, the “X” configuration in the center suggests negation or cancellation, but conversely and contradictorily holds the piece together structurally. In many of your pieces I see an intuitive interplay between gestural chaos and an underlying order- Viet Hoa 1 being another prime example. Like the later piece, it interlaces complex and delicate mark making with more robust compositional shapes. The small black triangles serve as directional arrows, moving the viewer through a cool liquidly ground. I also see an implied form or vessel in the central space, again anchoring smaller elements floating in its wake.
