Curator’s Comment:
Broken Shell came up in a random image search, and I didn’t initially recognize it as part of your highly cohesive and stylized series of manipulated porcelain vessels. The altered surface pigment greatly transforms the clay body, and while it appears heavier than the bleached white pieces with its subtly metallic finish, the tradeoff result is quite provocative. The fanned out petal forms appear slightly darker around their edges. I’m unsure if this is intentional due to the application of the acrylic finish, or just a play of light in the photograph. In either case, the darker exterior provides an interesting visual contrast in the form, particularly as the thin curled edges of the petals fold back, revealing their dark exterior side. I realize this piece was posted many years ago, and I do hope you continue to post new ceramic work on the site. The balance between honed craft and inventive form is readily apparent throughout your portfolio.
