Portfolios: Myth of faraway winds

Curator’s Comment:
Diagonal Cut has a vaguely mysterious mood- the piece’s low chroma violet and pink washes create a wonderful sense of twilight. The illumination is a soft glow, creating semi-translucent swathes of water and sky. With longer viewing I feel the piece might recall Monet’s renowned landscape Impression, Sunrise. While the diagonal in the piece elucidates a more dynamic horizon, the softening blur between the strata of space is only divided by the slightly darker tree line. Looking back through your other scenes I was reminded of the pieces I admired earlier using ink wash, with titles underscoring their Asian topography and fluid aesthetic sensibility. This painting, perhaps because of the oil media, has a more Western feel. The notation that this painting is part of a portfolio titled Myth of Faraway Winds further sets up the landscape as an unknowable land.
