Thank you so much for sharing your insights. They definitely reflect my own thoughts about this photo. Yes, my work does use point-counterpoint tensions between security and danger, and that which is known vs unknown, mystery and logic, tangible and intangible. I decided to take this photo because I felt that the lines and illusions resonated with what was actually going on physically and metaphysically. Perhaps the tensions are a reflection of my decades of observation as a medical doctor and poet, and my faith-life. I'm looking forward to sharing more of my work on this site. Again, thank you for your review.
Curator’s Comments:
This is a very interesting photograph. It has a formal push and pull to the space, and weathered wall surface that at first glance appears to be an abstract painting. The previous comments about the time of year and white roof surface were also a surprise; the industrial mechanisms within the image are suggestive of a frozen exterior and glowing warm interior. Compositionally, I like that the fire escape crosses on an unexpected diagonal in the middle of the picture plane. While it can be interpreted as a stabilizing structure, there also seems to be stacking going on above and below the precariously attached metal ladder. The yellow haze of the lamp provides a place of security within the piece, although the roof line does also arguably function as a step leading the viewer into the space. Several of your other pieces on the site nicely play with that idea of security within an interior/exterior framework.
