Curator’s Comments:
Documenta (1) stands apart from your other non-objective paintings, and seems to be more about quiet, restrained mark-making than dramatic formal contrasts. While I quite enjoyed looking through your Contact series again, Documenta has a sensitive and sophisticated aesthetic that builds during sustained viewing. While the actual physical scale of the piece isn’t indicated, I enjoy the micro/macrocosmic relationships between the positive and unoccupied space. The viewer could be given entry into the bottom of the composition by way of a maze like drawn entrance, but the overall space is expansive and airy. The dripped paint marks along the bottom ridge play with the idea of accident and predictability. I find it visually ironic that the break in color field potentially negates what is expected to be an illusionistic picture, but instead reveals more ambiguity of space, and another layer abstraction. In other words, I see the white bottom as both freshly unfinished and excavated. This formal tension is a smart counter element to all of the tiny shapes. I do hope you continue to post more work on the site.
