Curator’s Comment:
These images speak softly, in a dream language of symbols and alchemical relations. The low chroma, muted palette and organic texturing make way for small punctuations of blood red line and surprisingly graphic elements. I like this diptych in particular as it presents a sort of dichotomy. The needle’s scarlet thread weaves into the adjacent panel, to unite with similar vein like tendrils of line. While media isn’t indicated here, the surface seems to vacillate between a chalky, papery feel and more fluid painterly applications of pigment. There seems to be numerical significance to the objects- the pair of egg like shapes leads me to the three threaded needles, and then across the central separation axis to the four blue blocks. In this sense the piece builds in intensity and apparent significance. I also find it interesting that some of the elements in your work are instantly recognizable and form signs and symbols, while others stay ambiguously abstract. What I’ve called egg like shapes in the lower left, for instance, are cleaved, as if split in two inside a protective sack or embryonic encasement. The greenish organic lines leading outside of the pod exterior reinforce the idea that this is a growing organism, detached and arrested in its growth. The whitish sheet obscuring the large section on the right half also reveals as it obscures. Like Water, the piece is moving, rhythmic, familiar and mysterious.
