Curator’s Comments:
Down Highway 10 is a simply exquisite painting of an abandoned urban landscape. I had admired your lush use of color in a previous painting some time ago- Entering Dreamland- but the carnival palette transferred onto an eroded highway billboard is even more satisfying, as its visually unexpected. I’m drawn to its juxtaposition between the warm reflective signage and the more muddled pinks and greens in the distant sky. The pink reflected in the grass below suggests a light source coming in from the outer edge of the picture plane. It’s as if there’s a patina over the entire landscape. The extreme asymmetrical balance of the piece also sets up a strong and unexpected viewing of the space. The utility poles to the right, counterbalancing the visual weight of the sign, stand as figurative sentinels of the emptiness.
