Curator’s Comments:
For me this Cake Drawing runs somewhere in between a Wayne Thiebaud painting and a New Yorker cartoon. It is whimsical and light, both in form and expression. The arrangement invites a comparison and contrast of the loose individual renderings, which offer a good balance between variety and unity. But it strikes me as much more economic than your other densely layered drawings and collages. The images designated numerically as photo manipulations in particular push the visual aesthetic of ironic kitsch with their lacey borders and repeated stitch patterns. It’s interesting that these pieces and Cake Drawing are so far apart in terms of design and yet still smartly explore a decidedly feminine motif.
