Curator’s Comments:
I’m curious about these intricate landscapes which have a folk art feel, with an abundance of equally detailed and articulated people, houses and things. Some are positively Chagall-esque in their color palette and fantastical farmers with horses pulling carts on slanted hillsides. But this particular image seeks stark by comparison. The visual contrast between the complementary red and green structures is striking, while the quiet white ground provides compositional rest. I also appreciate the formal counterbalance of the curved arch of the bridge walkway against the similarly cool toned sky, which arcs in a mirrored curve behind the tree dotted hill on the left side of the picture plane. The illusion of depth seems to be constructed from a combination of linear and isometric perspective- stacking the space vertically without any dissolution of clarity. It is a welcome pictorial space. Idyllic in its snowy winter perfection, it strikes an interesting calm between the bright intense colors, mimicking the isolated activities of the small figures within the landscape.
From NY to the U.K., the most comprehensive and respected source for income & exhibition opportunities.
