Curator’s Comments:
This apparently untitled work (DSC_4359) posted back in 2012 is an interesting image. The vignette of the lone and barren tree on an achromatic ground poses a strong visual contrast to the verdant green and blue hues referencing the sky-ground relationship in a broader landscape. The choppy broken color creates waves of alternating tints and shadows that are subtly blended into a sea of grass. I read the image as a passage of time or seasons. There is also the sense of memory communicated in the compositional layering. The singular tree functions to some degree as a figural stand-in; remembering a warmer, and more welcoming clime in the winter. It’s interesting to see how your work manipulates the repeated framing device. I especially appreciate that rather than a decorative border, or flat color, the frame in this piece juxtaposes an entirely new environment to consider.
