Curator’s Comment:
I’m not certain what I’m viewing in these works- you reference straight photography in a couple of your other pictures, so I imagine these could include some form of hand manipulation, such as cliché-verre? The etched or scratched surface has an instinctual appeal, but the lightness and depth of the faded marks provide warmth to the gray and white areas. There really is no perceptible negative space, but an overlapping of soft black lines. They have the calligraphic and smudged quality of drypointed intaglio, and overlap in a topographic manner. That being said, it’s always challenging to look at very subtle work on line, as color can more easily translate bold graphic content. Untitled (stars) no doubt has more going on with surface and scale than I can fully realize here. While the surface appears matte rather than glossy, it appears to have an even more celestial, aerial light, suggesting constellation in form and title.
