Curator’s Comments:
These full figure and three-quarter portraits have visually striking and unusual figure-ground relationships partially due to the surprising tonal choices within a local color palette. I’m attracted to the way the orange-brown skin tones merge with the figure’s clothing in first and third images. (IMG 1956 and DSCO 4348) The figures exude emotional warmth and along with inexplicable familiarity and intelligence. But they also convey an ever so slight apprehension. This presumably untitled figurative work (DSCO 4355) is also remarkable in that it appears to be an unlikely composite of several different stylistic approaches to the subject and scene. The emphasis on the bright red baggage offsets the compositional weight of the figure, but also makes him appear forlorn by comparison with his bleached out cool color blending into the background. I’m intrigued by the flatter handling of his clothing, which lacks the chiaroscuro present in his face, hands and feet in favor of graphic, almost cut out shapes and patterns. The man fits beautifully into the simple architectural space, and gives the viewer a sense of transience, through both his environment and ghostly appearance.
