Thank you for the wonderful response
Curator’s Comment:
This is a very expressionistic piece- it reminds me of Sandro Chia’s wonderfully chaotic interiors. I’m uncertain if the subject of this piece also relates conceptually to a violinist, as there’s a more representational version of the subject in one of your other posted works in the same folio. But it’s that very lack of specificity that intrigues me about this particular work. The suggested figure is but one element in the space, and “she” could be a dress rather than a real flesh and blood being. The white in the background space is harsh and severe, and implies an inhospitable reflective glare from square windows or video screens. I enjoy the small bits of higher chroma green and blue throughout the white dress form, and the more saturated red ground. The work also appears to have a good amount of actual texture, perhaps from an impasto handling of the media. All of the works in the “Violinist” portfolios look emotionally distraught; either agitated or passionately enraptured.
The reclining nude female (100 x 800) embodies this dramatic duality. Her body vibrates with color and expressive lines, but without arms she has no control, and the contorted cropping of her torso is psychologically distressing.
