Curator’s Comments:
I’ve looked at this installation several times, and still am unsure that I’ve fully digested the impact of their visual presence and intent. The individual works appear to be quiet, meditative drawings when formally removed from the narrative content of the ‘Disaster’ title slide. Seen through this lens, they take on a more ominous quality. Slowly building the linear marks while counting upwards or downwards implies a compelling slowing down of time. Numbers are seen floating into nothingness, or down into the abyss of the tonal charcoal field. The numerals could indicate dates or moments lost; years or seconds, or an ill-omened catalog of looming crisis. But there is also a pristine beauty in the simplicity of the physical drawing. The small white borders crisply confine the blackness, making it alternating thick and solid and ethereal. They’re like drawings of smoke. Seen in a grouping, they look even more deliberately sequential. Then there is what seems to be an outlier (DSCN0458) with a swirling eye forming in the cloud of dark grey. An oculus, it is threatening as an irregular, organic entity against the constraints of known and recognized calculations.
From NY to the U.K., the most comprehensive and respected source for income & exhibition opportunities.
