Curator’s Comments:
I enjoy viewing these new ink drawings you’d added to the site. They maintain the bold achromatic figuration I’d admired in previous abstract pieces, but the space appears to become both denser, and more expansive. The active patterns reach to all edges of the picture plane, rather than form contained biomorphic shapes. The patterns still recall decorative designs, but also include more recognizable or specific human motifs in this picture. The two black facial silhouettes cap the wing-like shapes in the center of the compositions, and yet are dominated visually by the two stylized eyes and row of smiling teeth in the bottom section. The human faces are similar structurally, but I’m wondering if they are intended to represent gender duality. The circular shapes moving off from the mouths of the heads imply symbolic references to the sun and moon, or elemental symbols of earth and water. If this is expressed, the pattern might align with universal mating associations, or mirroring systems in nature.
