Curator’s Comments:
Posted several years ago, I just came across Reclining Nude today. It’s an intriguing work, appearing to combine a somewhat academic painterly approach to the figure with a more fantastical landscape. The swirling blue lines above the subject’s head could allude to a waterfall, or steaming thought pattern, while the diagonal angle of the body flows out from this blue current. The local color of the figure’s flesh, and pensive pose also intimates a daydream, or memory of a lush landscape. However, the title of the painting doesn’t offer any insights into their visually contrasting spaces. Looking through your other works on the site, I remember enjoying the methodical hatched linear patterns of Chaos, and some other constructed landscapes with surreal, compartmentalized elements. It’s interesting to see representational forms dissolve into invented and unexpected visions.
