Curator’s Comment:
What incredibly fleshy works! The cropping of the figure gives a categorically voyeuristic mood to the paintings, but at the same time I feel as a viewer that I become detached from the subject because of the extreme abstraction. I struggle to make out exactly what I’m seeing- the reddish reflection on the organic lobes of the skin surfaces seems to heighten in intensity when they meet. The puckering shape in the center becomes a point of fixation, but there is still no revelation to be had in terms of bodily recognition. Flounder (untitled?) becomes even more enigmatic because we see folds and forms that are more referential to the body. Corporeal form derides classic perception in this works, but somehow I still find them reminiscent of Jenny Saville’s early works of ample models. The facial details of other pieces show off your skill as a painter and colorist, but I’m ultimately pulled back to the cropped abstractions which give way to voluptuous indulgence.
