Curator’s Comments:
Dutch Flowers came up randomly on the site today, and I was surprised to see it within your portfolio, having previously enjoyed your bold pattern-based, radial designs. Looking back through your other images, it strikes me that the figurative Dutch Flowers lies somewhere between your very representational human and animal portraits, and mandala-like Ornament series. The figure in this piece has a beautiful graphic contour, and the stark black, white and red shapes contrast each other to create a pleasing visual harmony. The extreme asymmetrical balance of the composition is also unexpected, creating a distinctive spatial relationship between the bright red elements. I also appreciate the aesthetic choice to keep the woman’s face light at the center of her white bonnet- she appears to float among her sea of potted flowers.
