Curator’s Comments:
Riverwalk bursts forth in full Fauvist color- the scene actually reminds me of some of the explosively colorful canal paintings by Derain. That the perspective is slightly askew adds an interesting element to the painting. Like your other architectural compositions, the buildings are not completely grounded, but levitate or float in pools of pure blue and crimson. The viewer is also given a vantage point that’s slightly above the water, allowing us to see a split picture of sorts, of both the aerial walkways and plants in the foreground. I also like this painting the most among the ones you have posted because of the gestural quality and complexity of the broken color. While some flat areas add variation in the space, the inclusion of small flame-like brushstrokes moves my eyes fluidly over the entire piece. The allover inclusion of primary reds and blues in particular harmonize and energize the cityscape.
