Curator’s Comments:
Having previously admired and followed your painting practice for some time, I was pleased to come across this sculptural piece by chance. The miniature cast resin sculpture entitled Encounter packs an emotional punch for its small scale. The twisting diagonal trajectory of the carved waters puts the tiny figures precariously close to the shark in the water, which is proportional to their boat. This visual opposition sets up an interesting tension and counterbalance of forces in an immediately understood narrative. The smoother surface of the shark still maintains the gestural sensibility in the piece, as the artist’s hand is compellingly present throughout the sculpture. I appreciate your inclusion of two views of the work so that we could see how the head of the shark turns in towards the boat, but I wonder which color more accurately depicts the piece. Whether the lighter gray or warmer brown tone, I’m glad the sculpture is monochromatic, as it combines the fate of the multiple participants.
