Curator’s Comments:
Thank you for inviting me to comment on this new work! Just when I’m confident I’m conversant with your sculptural practice, your work evolves. At initial viewing Endeavor is much flatter, and more horizontally-oriented than your other three- dimensional constructions. While your signature use of matte primary hues is still evident, this piece moves more unpredictably into a tinted color palette, with black and white inclusions. The mixed media work is laid out so that it suggests a game-board or obstacle course; perhaps this is reinforced for me because of the black key-like shape protruding from the blue cube in the closest corner of the photo. Other forms suggest gears and pulleys that could be activated for internal movements, as in a Rube Goldberg invention. I find it curious and intriguing that the white rods cross over the piece, forming an “x” as in cancellation as they levitate a bit off of the grounded vertical elements. The “twoness” of these elements again suggests human activation to me- chopsticks, drum sticks, etc. This sculpture doesn’t include the cultural references I was growing accustomed to in your recent pieces, and as such stays in a more universal, and formal aesthetic realm. The scale noted suggests a maquette for a large installation. While I enjoy viewing the work on this size, I can also envision Endeavor successfully engaging on full human scale. Thank you for continuing to share this work. I look forward to the next one.
