Portfolios: The East

Curator’s Comments:
I find these fairytale like illustrations especially strong when incorporating decorative pattern and architecture. Hymn to the East offers a graphic frame for the figures below, setting the scene and creating an enclosure of intimacy. I appreciate how the high chroma blue and red hues within the costume on the male figure offset the visual weight of the cut out turret. The gradation of yellow-orange color and value within the background sky serves to soften the hard edged design. I also enjoy the image entitled Eternity for its simple narrative derived from intricate line work. The spatial shift of the window openings depart from a purely symmetrical arrangement, keeping the space from appearing static and further placing emphasis on the small and vulnerable subject. Rather than dominating the figures, these architectural structures provide a sense of place, and further their single scene narratives.
