Curator’s Comment:

Charming and faintly disturbing, these small rotund creatures are best viewed as a grouping.  The soft organic modulation of the watercolor medium offers a tempering of the hard graphic edges in the digital illustrations.  I can’t quite characterize their familiar attributes; plant, vegetable or mineral.  But their primacy bulbous shapes and tiny appendages are also disarming. I feel the pink coloration of this particular one enhances the fleshy association, as with shrimp, or a baby/fetal mammal.  Floating in their pale and empty backgrounds, their vulnerability is part of the allure.  These works are the stuff of half-awake dreams.  Conversely, the fully modeled digital images strike me as more real than imagined, more horrifyingly disfigured and ultimately threatening.  But there is also humor. With highly realistic and textural skins, they are convincing as nature taking a detour from her standard chromosomal plans. Fishee registers as a sort of hybrid image- holding the line between bulging eyed cuteness and organic deformity. Your skill level and dexterity in multiple media and approaches is enviable.  I’m convinced the Etsy images are drawings of the “actual” creatures.
