This is one of the smartest photorealistic paintings I’ve seen. Aside from the expert skill level in capturing the nuanced light and shadow, the piece challenges the viewers altered perceptions of reality. There’s some disorientation as it’s not immediately evident what is interior and which space is exterior. The corner vantage point and reversal of signage in the glass is as fresh and clear as the ‘real’ interior space. There is also an interesting placement of chrome handles in opposition to each other, which mimic the curve of the chair arms. The outdoor foliage may be the only extraneous element- but greenery reappears inside the bistro and in the window box in the lower left. The hyper-realism caught my attention, but the ambiguity of the intervals of space keeps me looking.
