Curator’s Comment:
I shared Bob’s initial impression that this piece is Matisee-like with its economic blue female forms. (And I concur with TLBijeaux that it’s very nicely done.) What is especially pleasing to me about the drawing as a repeated figurative motif is the calligraphic variation in linear measure- with ink the artist may become more aware of this choice than with cut paper. The outstretched arms of the two central gestures create long horizontal bands, disrupting and slowing the otherwise predominant vertical trajectory of the composition. I also like that the figures and faces (some horses?) aren’t rendered with more detail or attention than the other body areas, as it sustains a fluid, cohesive momentum. While the image may be cropped in this slide, the right side appears to contain open sections, where the negative space easily travels to the edge of the piece. While the individual works in your portfolio seem quite disparate in terms of technique and approach, I’m also drawn to the achromatic photograph Thursday Morning Fog. While initially it appears to share little with the former drawing, it also lends itself to an interesting staccato of positive and negative space. The asymmetrical balance of visual weight is less expected and reassuring, but creates a dramatic visual pause.
