Curator’s Comment:  

 

Falls at Indian Run is a romantic, ephemeral image, in which a transitory moment stand stills.  I especially partial to the pieces that have small elements of hazy surrealism as it moves them into a fantastical albeit believable genre.  Compositionally, I also respond to the slight bend of the tree line in this image, as the repeated individual trees jut out of the craggy rocks.  They push towards the flow of the water, but the warmer orange and violet in the background helps anchor me in the space.  The green moss appears incandescent against the dark and light values throughout the picture, offering textural contrast and patterning as in heightened awareness.  I believe the use of implied diagonal lines in your work offers the most visual interest, as the serenity of the long horizontal elements duplicates the soft manipulation of the water, grass, etc.  But while the deep color is resplendent in many works, I am predominantly drawn to them for your extraordinary use of light and shadow.  By obscuring natural forms and landscape in velvety shadows, the altered environments produce a shimmering and luminous exchange.
