Curator’s Comments:
I enjoy the whimsical nature of this painting, and the inclusion of spotted geometric fragments along the linear pathways snaking through the design. It surprised me that the media of this painting, Cavallo con torro, is oil and henna on canvas. Perhaps more so than in the other related works, the sepia colored shadows make the cut-out animal shapes appear dimensional. The reflection on the thin gray linear contours suggest a metallic finish, while the interior is filled in with opaque flat color. Looking back through your other pieces on the site, I recall commenting on the beautiful and enigmatic Mulini a vento several years ago. I also noted your complex use of layered materials in other works, and wonder if the same intaglio and bas-relief are employed in Cavallo con torro. Whatever may be the process, I’m intrigued with the cropping of space in this work and others, as they appear to be sections of larger wholes. There is a continuous thread woven through these paintings that supports free associations between plants, animals, and the wider world.
