Curator’s Comments:
I’m very attracted to Lady in Green for the division of space between her figure and ground. The ghost like quality of muted colors in her face echo the thin contour lines around her cloaked head, and then branch out into the more solid mass of her body. I like the tension between the fluid handling of her top half and background, against the darker and rougher tonalities below. It really is an exquisite and surprising combination of approaches to the subject, creating a slight ambiguity or spatial shift. The media isn’t indicated on this piece, but I imagine the washed out hues are watercolor, while the layered darker body appears to have glazed color. I’ve enjoyed viewing the artwork you have on the site, which vacillates between controlled drawings and more haptic, expressive gesture. Lady in Green appears to fall in the measured or restrained category, but takes a surprising fresh turn that is both inviting and arresting.
