This is the entrance to the once-grand Tyrone House, Co. Galway, Ireland. The residents once owned the land as far as the eye could see: times have changed (for the better) and now local farmers rear cattle in the fields. The sky is a typical summer's day in Galway. Pen and ink and watercolor.

Curator’s Comments:

View across the fields from Tyrone House has a gorgeous sense of light.  The delicacy of the ink and watercolor effectively contrasts the relationships between the ground, sky and worn stone structure.  I particularly like the reflected yellow-green hues that cross over onto the front of the façade, reading as both moss and filtered light.  I also find it interesting that the structure creates a visual diptych of space; the central opening on top is flanked by the closed stone pediment openings with overgrown brush, and had a slightly lowered top frame. These irregularities in the entranceway, real or invented, slow down the visual movement across the picture place and add compositional variation. Perhaps because of your accompanying narrative about the painting I find myself contemplating, among other things, the biological world’s resistance to maintenance and structuring, as it reverts back to its natural shape.
