Curator’ Comment:
I’m charmed by this piece, and amused with how Bite Size immediately conjures a sweet block of food, despite the denial of an edible subject. I’m unsure if the matches hold a particular association between their function and the anticipated food item, as the graphic signage of the box is intentionally clear, and holds up against the cherry-red fork. Otherwise, the candy-colored palette teases the viewer into a seductively bright and simple space, as we are accustomed to seeing commercially staged morsels of various kinds. Maybe this is not even as commercial a rift as I may have first surmised, with the prevalence of food displays on social media. Your practice was certainly ahead of the curve, looking through pieces made several years ago. I remember commenting on the witty portrait entitled Sliced back in 2014. The pieces you have on the site all seem to undercut expectations of consumption- whether with actual prepared foods, or with the pop commodification of an artists’ brand.
